Explore the science of the cave and its ecosystem at Kartchner Caverns State Park's "Cave Fest" on Saturday and Sunday, January 21 and 22, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special guests including those from the University of Arizona and the Arizona Game & Fish Department will have presentations about water conservation efforts, how Kartchner Caverns differs from other caves, and future plans for cave conservation.

Activities for the whole family will include live animal displays (reptiles and amphibians with the Huachuca Area Herpetological Association; birds, owls and raptors with Fallen Feathers), children's activities and crafts, Benson Visitor Center's Bat Mobile and local caving clubs will have a show and tell with caving equipment. Big Woody's will be on hand with hot dogs, BBQ, shave ice and more!

Don't miss the CaveSim, an electronic simulator with 60 feet of crawling passage and realistic cave formations with sensors to give users feedback with videogame-type scoring. This caving experience is for beginner and experienced cavers aged six and older.

The cost of the event is the park entrance fee of $7 per vehicle. Guided tours inside the cave are available for an additional fee but should be reserved in advance at 1-877-MY-PARKS or AZStateParks.com.

  • 10 a.m. - Erika Way, Kartchner Caverns' Cave Unit Supervisor- Cave conservation in a developed cave 
  • 2 p.m. - University of Arizona Water Wise: Water conservation and harvesting
